Art

Intent

At St Mary’s, we believe that art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. They can give a voice to the imagination, wisdom, emotions and character of a child. Our high-quality art and design education engages, inspires and challenges our children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art.

Implementation

Art activities are planned systematically in order to progressively build up skills and knowledge throughout the children's journey across the school and within individual learning journeys. We ensure that all children are given opportunities to be inspired by the creative arts through community links, access to a diverse range of professional artists and a wide range of after school clubs. Across the school, children encounter a wide range of artists and artworks from different cultures, periods in history, and genders. We encourage exploration, individuality and team work, ensuring that children feel that their work is valued. Subject specific vocabulary is made explicit to encourage the language of art. Risk and innovation are encouraged in all year groups because preconceptions can stifle creativity. As a school, we are less focussed on an outcome and more focussed on the creative journey, so that, rather than potentially constraining children's understanding and learning, they are enabled to be truly creative.

Impact

When children leave the school, their learning in art will have enabled them to become confident, independent artists who can articulate and value their own creative journeys. They will be able to think critically and have developed a rigorous understanding of art and design. Their understanding of how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our communities and the world is an important part of this process.

Curriculum Drivers

Environmental Stewardship

Throughout our art curriculum environmental stewardship is promoted through certain projects that utilise recycled materials, depict natural landscapes, or raise awareness about ecological issues. By creating art that reflects their appreciation for the environment and highlights the importance of conservation, children develop a deeper understanding of their role as stewards of the planet and are inspired to take action to protect it.

Global Mindset, Diversity and Inclusion

We promote global mindset, diversity, and inclusion by introducing children to a wide range of artistic styles and cultural traditions from around the world. Through exploring diverse artistic expressions, children learn to appreciate different perspectives and celebrate the richness of various cultures, fostering an inclusive environment where all voices and identities are valued and respected.

Play-Based Learning

Our art curriculum utilises play-based learning to encourage creativity and exploration. By providing opportunities for children to experiment with various art materials and techniques in a relaxed and playful environment, and through the use of sketch books, children can freely express themselves and develop their artistic skills in a joyful and uninhibited way.

Belonging

At St Mary’s, fostering a sense of belonging is crucial as it creates an inclusive environment where children feel valued and respected for their unique artistic contributions. Through collaborative projects and sharing their creations, children develop a sense of community and connection, strengthening their belongingness within the school and fostering a supportive creative atmosphere.

Inspiration and Aspiration

At our school we inspire and nurture aspiration by exposing children to various artistic styles, techniques, and accomplished artists. By engaging in creative expression and witnessing the work of others, children are encouraged to explore their own artistic potential and aspire to achieve excellence in their artistic endeavours.

Spiritual Development

Our art curriculum supports spiritual development by providing children with a medium to explore and express their inner thoughts, values, and beliefs. Through creating and reflecting on their artwork, children can connect with their emotions and experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the world.

Communication and Storytelling

At St Mary’s, we enhance communication and storytelling skills by allowing children to express their ideas and emotions through visual mediums. As children create and share their artwork, they learn to convey narratives and concepts, effectively developing their ability to communicate and tell stories in imaginative and impactful ways.
