Spelling Rule: -ly suffix
The normal rules apply: The suffix –ly starts with a consonant, so it is added straight onto most root words. E.g. sadly, usually, finally.
Other rules:
If the root word ends in –y with a consonant letter before it, the y is changed to i, but only if the root word has more than one syllable e.g. happy = happily, angry = angrily.
If the root word ends with –le, the –le is changed to –ly e.g. gently = gently, simple = simply, humble = humbly, noble = nobly.
If the root word ends with –ic, -ally is usually added rather than just –ly (except in the word publicly) e.g. basically, frantically, dramatically.
Why do we have this rule?
The suffix –ly is added to an adjective to form an adverb.
Word list:
likely,

Exceptions: truly, duly, wholly.
